Over the years I have had the opportunity to go on long road trips with my friends. During these road trip some of my best friendships have been formed, and last weekend I was able to take another similar trip with my family to visit friends and family in Utah.
Our first thought when we started planning this trip was that our Cavalier was too small of a car to travel that far in, so we rented a Ford Escape. The car allowed enough room for me to sit up straight while driving and provided me with enough leg room to feel comfortable in either of the front seats. The next thought was a trip in a car, for that long, with two small children!

It turned out to be a great drive. I let Kyler and Logan each take a turn at driving, Kyler managed to keep the car on the road while Logan enjoyed just holding onto the wheel and leaning one way or the other. We found that Logan likes to sleep through long car trips. I was also able to enjoy my wife's company. It almost felt like the most alone time we have had together since we've had kids, even though both were in the back seat sleeping. We had some very insightful conversations. My favorite part of the trip was hearing the amazement in Kyler's voice when he awoke to the sight of the Columbia river. He just said, "Oh, water!".
On the trip I discovered a little more about my parenting skills. It isn't easy watching your children get physically hurt. With Kyler we have only had to deal with bumped heads and an occasional bruise that would show up on his arm or leg. It really hasn't phased him much. This trip however we got to see some real injuries, skinned knees. It brought back memories of how much they hurt, and how long they lasted (mainly due to me being an active kid). It looks like Kyler is following in his dad's footsteps with always having skinned knees. The first day he fell on his tricycle when transitioning from pavement to gravel and he skinned one knee. I waited to react to see how he would react. At first he didn't get up, but he didn't cry. He then crawled out from under his bike, rubbed his hands together to get the dirt off them and then jumped right on his bike. As soon as I saw that his knee was bleeding I swooped in and provided first aid. The next day he was running and fell. I hoped that it would go over as smoothly as the first incident, but it didn't. The water works happened immediately and this time he wouldn't let me touch his knee. He just wanted to be held. The worst incident happened on Saturday at Lauren's reception. Kyler tripped over a slightly raised stone while running, fell forward and smacked his head on the paving stone. I don't blame him for crying on that one. I didn't even realize he was bleeding until someone pointed out that I had blood all over the side of my shirt. When the trip was over this is what his knees looked like.
